These are broad overviews to help you shortlist. Requirements, licensing, program availability and pay vary by state, employer, program, credentials, experience and overtime.

Surgical / procedural

Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant

Credential pathway
Master's-level pathways, followed by national certification and state-specific practice rules

Best for
Career changers with a strong science background who want anesthesia care delivered within a physician-led team.

Prerequisite warning: Heavy premed-style prerequisites and an admissions exam are typical. Practice authority is limited to certain states, so confirm where you could actually work before enrolling.

Not the same role: a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant is a master's-level provider who administers anaesthesia under physician supervision, while an anesthesia technologist supports the anaesthesia team with equipment, setup and airway supplies. Different training, different scope, different pay — neither is a stepping stone to the other.

Surgical / procedural

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

Credential pathway
Doctoral nursing pathways that begin with RN licensure and critical care experience

Roughly 3-4 years of program time, after nursing school and required ICU experience
Best for
People already in nursing, or willing to complete nursing school first, who want an advanced practice anesthesia role.

Prerequisite warning: This is a long runway. You generally need a BSN, an active RN license, and typically at least one year of full-time critical care experience before you can apply.

Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Imaging & diagnostics

MRI Technologist

Credential pathway
Certificate or associate pathways, often entered after a radiography credential, plus certification

People who like technology, protocols, and steady scheduled work with moderate patient contact.

Prerequisite warning: Many MRI pathways expect an existing imaging credential or documented clinical experience first, which adds time. Some states add their own licensure.

Less-travelled pathways

Rare specialties with high earnings upside

These roles are uncommon, not easy. Several offer a shorter entry route and strong overtime or call potential, but earnings upside varies enormously: overtime availability is set by the employer and the local market, and rare does not always mean plentiful jobs. Nothing here is a guarantee of admission, hours, or pay.

Best starting points without a prior clinical credential

Sleep technology, sterile processing, dialysis technician, and — depending entirely on each program's admissions requirements — some neurodiagnostic and invasive cardiovascular programs.

Usually requires a prior credential

Surgical first assistant, hyperbaric technologist and ECMO specialist, plus some IONM and cath-lab routes where the employer hires only from existing surgical technology, radiography or nursing staff.

Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring (IONM) / Neurodiagnostic Technologist

Few schools teach it, most learning happens case-by-case in the operating room, and many employers are small specialty companies rather than hospitals.
Fastest legitimate entry route
A CAAHEP-accredited neurodiagnostic technology program or a structured employer training track, paired with supervised cases and a recognised certification pathway (ABRET CNIM route).
Realistic training range
Direct training is often about 12-24 months depending on the pathway. Certification also requires a documented number of supervised cases, which is counted separately from classroom time.
Prerequisites are separate: Prerequisites (science coursework or a prior degree, depending on the program) are separate from program length and can add a term or more.
Overtime & call drivers
Call coverage, early surgical start times, unpredictable long cases and regional travel between hospitals can create extra-pay opportunities. Availability is employer- and location-dependent.
What can limit earnings
Case volume drives hours: a slow surgical week means fewer paid hours in some models. Unpaid travel time, contractor arrangements and certification-in-progress pay tiers can all reduce earnings.
United States
No U.S. state licence exists for this role in most jurisdictions; employers and surgeons set requirements, and certification is the common benchmark. Certification alone does not grant legal practice authority.
Canada
Canadian titles and employment models differ; neurophysiology roles are usually hospital-based and provincially defined. There may be no direct Canadian equivalent to the U.S. IONM contractor model — confirm with the provincial employer or health authority.

Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist / Cardiac Cath Lab Technologist

Often open without a prior clinical credential
Why it is uncommon
Programs are limited, cohorts are small, and many labs staff from existing radiologic or nursing teams rather than hiring newly trained people.
Fastest legitimate entry route
A CAAHEP-accredited cardiovascular technology (invasive) associate program, or a post-primary specialisation for people who already hold a radiography or nursing credential, followed by certification (CCI or ARRT-VI where applicable).
Realistic training range
Commonly about 18-24 months of program time at the associate level; a post-primary specialisation can be shorter but only for people who already hold the qualifying credential.
Prerequisites are separate: Science prerequisites — or the entire prior credential in the post-primary route — sit outside the program length and must be counted separately.
Overtime & call drivers
STEMI and stroke call, nights, weekends and emergency call-backs can create substantial premium hours in labs that take emergencies. Not every lab takes call.
What can limit earnings
Elective-only labs and ambulatory centres may offer little or no call. Entry requirements vary widely by employer, and certification timelines can delay full-rate pay.
United States
Some states license radiologic personnel who perform fluoroscopy-adjacent duties; scope depends on state rules and employer privileges as much as on certification.
Canada
In Canada, cath-lab staffing often draws on medical radiation technologists or registered nurses regulated provincially. A U.S. 'cardiovascular invasive specialist' title may have no direct Canadian equivalent — check the provincial regulator.

Specialisation branch: cardiac electrophysiology

Electrophysiology is not a separate pathway — it is the same educational pipeline as the cath lab. The entry credential is CCI's RCES (Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist); its routes include two years of full-time EP work experience, a health science or cardiovascular technology program plus one year of EP experience, or graduation from a programmatically accredited EP program. IBHRE's CEPS is the later, more advanced credential, and all of its routes assume you already work in an EP lab. One honest caveat about job listings: a meaningful share of EP-lab “specialists” are device-company clinical representatives rather than hospital employees, which distorts how the role appears in postings.

Polysomnographic (Sleep) Technologist

Often open without a prior clinical credential
Why it is uncommon
Sleep labs are small, often run overnight with one or two staff, and training programs are far less common than nursing or radiography.
Fastest legitimate entry route
A CAAHEP/CoA PSG accredited certificate or associate program, or an approved self-study/on-the-job pathway that makes you eligible for the BRPT credentialing route.
Realistic training range
Certificate or associate pathways may run about 1-2 years. Credentialing requires documented clinical experience that is tracked separately from coursework.
Prerequisites are separate: Basic science coursework, immunisations and background checks are typically prerequisites, not part of program length.
Overtime & call drivers
Overnight shifts, weekend studies and chronically understaffed labs can create differentials and overtime. Availability depends entirely on the employer and local demand.
What can limit earnings
Home sleep testing has shifted some volume out of labs in certain markets. Night work has real health costs, and base pay is often below advanced procedural roles.
United States
A minority of states license or register sleep technologists; most rely on the BRPT credential plus employer requirements. Verify eligibility with your state before enrolling.
Canada
Sleep technology is generally unregulated or employer-defined in Canada and titles vary by province; a U.S. credential may not be recognised automatically. Confirm with the employer and provincial authority.

Sterile Processing Technician

It is a hidden department most people never see, and hiring is done quietly through hospital and surgery-centre training pipelines.
Fastest legitimate entry route
An employer-paid training pathway or a certificate program, followed by a recognised certification (HSPA or CBSPD) that usually requires documented hands-on hours.
Realistic training range
Some employer or certificate routes can be completed in months, but competence requires meaningful supervised hands-on experience — certification bodies count those hours separately from coursework.
Prerequisites are separate: Typically a secondary diploma, immunisations and a background check; these are prerequisites rather than program time.
Overtime & call drivers
Nights, weekends, add-on surgical cases and persistent staffing shortages can create overtime in many hospitals. It is employer- and location-dependent.
What can limit earnings
Base pay is usually lower than advanced procedural roles, so overtime does a lot of the work in the income picture. Physically demanding, heat- and chemical-exposed environments.
United States
A few states now require certification for sterile processing personnel; most do not, and employer policy governs. Certification alone is not legal practice authority.
Canada
In Canada, medical device reprocessing is usually governed by employer policy, provincial health authority standards and accreditation programs (including Accreditation Canada requirements) rather than a personal licence.

Hemodialysis / Dialysis Patient Care Technician

Often open without a prior clinical credential
Why it is uncommon
Most training happens inside dialysis organisations rather than colleges, so the route is invisible from a normal school search.
Fastest legitimate entry route
An employer training program or a certificate route, followed by the required supervised experience and a recognised certification (BONENT, NNCC or equivalent) within the timeline U.S. federal rules set for the role.
Realistic training range
Initial training may be measured in weeks to months, followed by required supervised experience and a certification deadline that is separate from the training itself.
Prerequisites are separate: Secondary diploma, immunisations and background checks are typical prerequisites, not program time.
Overtime & call drivers
Very early shift starts, extra treatment turns and staffing shortages can create overtime. Availability varies by clinic and region.
What can limit earnings
The work is physically and emotionally demanding, pay varies widely by employer and region, and outpatient chains may cap hours. Turnover is high for a reason.
United States
U.S. Medicare Conditions for Coverage require dialysis patient care technicians to be certified within a set period after hire, in addition to any state rules.
Canada
In Canada, dialysis care is typically delivered by registered nurses or provincially defined support roles; a U.S.-style dialysis technician may have no direct Canadian equivalent. Confirm with the provincial regulator and health authority.

Anesthesia Technologist (Cer.A.T.T.)

Not the same role: a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant is a master's-level provider who administers anaesthesia under physician supervision, while an anesthesia technologist supports the anaesthesia team with equipment, setup and airway supplies. Only about 12 CAAHEP-accredited anesthesia technology programs exist nationally, so the route is geographically scarce and most people have never heard of the role. Many departments train staff informally instead of hiring credentialed technologists.
Fastest legitimate entry route
A CAAHEP-accredited program approved by the CoA-ATE — these confer an AAS or AS and make graduates board-eligible — followed by the ASATT National Certification Exam. Two other routes exist: a Practical Experience Pathway for people with multiple years of documented anesthesia experience, and an Advancement Program for existing Certified Anesthesia Technicians. ASATT no longer offers the Cer.A.T. (technician) exam; existing holders stay recognised, but the technologist credential is the current route.
Realistic training range
The accredited degree programs are associate-level, commonly around two years. The experience pathway is not faster in practice — it substitutes years of documented on-the-job time for coursework.
Prerequisites are separate: Science prerequisites and admission requirements sit outside program length; the experience pathway requires documented anesthesia work that must be accumulated first.
Overtime & call drivers
Call coverage, nights, weekends, trauma and add-on cases in departments that staff around the clock. Employer- and location-dependent.

Pay is meaningfully below the anesthesiologist assistant route and varies widely. Only 12 accredited programs means many people have no program within reach, and many hospitals staff the function with uncredentialed techs, which caps both hiring and pay.
United States
Most states do not license this role — employers define scope, and certification is the common benchmark rather than legal practice authority. Recertification requires 30 CEs every two years plus current ACLS from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Canada

Histotechnician / Histotechnologist (HT/HTL)

Why it is uncommon
It is a bench role inside the pathology laboratory that patients never see, and hiring happens quietly through hospital and reference labs rather than through visible public job pipelines.
Fastest legitimate entry route
For HT(ASCP): 60 semester hours or an associate degree including 12 semester hours combining biology and chemistry, plus one of — a NAACLS-accredited histotechnician program completed within the last 5 years, one year of full-time histopathology laboratory experience, or a structured two-part histology program of at least 9 months that includes a minimum of 480 hours of clinical experience.
Realistic training range
HTL(ASCP) requires a baccalaureate degree with 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry, or an existing HT plus a bachelor’s degree plus six months’ experience. Program lengths vary; the coursework floor and the clinical-hours floor are counted separately.
Prerequisites are separate: The 12 (HT) or 30 (HTL) semester hours of biology and chemistry are prerequisites and sit outside program length.
Overtime & call drivers
Second and third shifts, weekend coverage and turnaround-time pressure in high-volume pathology and reference laboratories. Availability is employer- and location-dependent.
What can limit earnings
Bench work in a pathology lab with essentially no patient contact, routine formaldehyde and xylene exposure, and advancement past HT is gated on a bachelor’s degree. The experience route has a chicken-and-egg problem — you must already be working in a laboratory to use it.
United States
Recertification runs through the ASCP Credential Maintenance Program: 36 points per three-year cycle. New York licenses histotechnologists — see the New York State Education Department page below. Nothing is claimed here about any other state; verify with your own state directly.
Canada

Medical Dosimetrist (CMD)

Why it is uncommon
Programs are few and concentrated in academic cancer centres, and clinical placement capacity keeps class sizes very small.
Fastest legitimate entry route
For the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB) CMD credential: a bachelor’s degree in any discipline plus graduation from a JRCERT-accredited medical dosimetry program of at least 12 months.
Realistic training range
The accredited program itself is a minimum of 12 months. The bachelor’s degree that precedes it is separate and is usually the longer part of the timeline.
Prerequisites are separate: Critically, “any bachelor’s degree” is the certification board’s floor, not the programs’. Individual programs set their own admissions preferences and commonly favour radiation therapy or physics backgrounds — check each program’s own admissions page before assuming you are eligible.
Overtime & call drivers
Planning backlogs, treatment-start deadlines and coverage in busy radiation oncology departments. Availability is employer-dependent.
What can limit earnings
Programs are few and concentrated in academic cancer centres, so relocation is often unavoidable. Clinical placement capacity limits class sizes, making admission competitive.
United States
Recertification runs on five-year cycles requiring 50 continuing education credits. The MDCB’s international eligibility route was terminated as of the September 2025 exam. No licensure claim is made here — verify your own state’s rules directly.
Canada

Ophthalmic Assistant → Technician → Technologist (COA/COT/COMT)

Often open without a prior clinical credential
Why it is uncommon
It is a ladder rather than one job, most employment sits in private practice rather than hospitals, and the accredited school route is geographically thin.
Fastest legitimate entry route
IJCAHPO COA entry routes: an ICA-accredited clinical program with no work experience required; or an accredited non-clinical program plus 500 supervised hours; or high school plus an approved independent study course plus 1,000 supervised hours in the 12 months before applying.
Realistic training range
This is a ladder. COT requires an accredited technician-level program, or a prior COA plus 12 Group A credits plus 2,000 hours employed as a COA. COMT requires an accredited technologist-level program plus two or more years of college, or a prior COT plus 12 Group A credits plus 6,000 hours employed as a COT.
Prerequisites are separate: The supervised-hours requirements are prerequisites to certification, not part of program length, and the 1,000-hour route requires being employed in an ophthalmology practice first.
Overtime & call drivers
Extended clinic hours, surgical-day support and testing backlogs in busy practices. Availability is employer-dependent.
What can limit earnings
The lowest-barrier route requires 1,000 supervised hours before you can certify, so you must be hired into an ophthalmology practice untrained first. Only 47 accredited US programs makes the school route geographically thin, the full ladder is a multi-year climb, and most employment is private practice rather than hospitals.
United States
Certifications are valid 36 months: COA requires 18 credits per cycle, COT 27 and COMT 36. Accreditation is through the International Council of Accreditation (ICA), formerly CoA-OMP, which lists 54 programs, 47 of them in the United States.
Canada

Cytotechnologist (CT)

Often open without a prior clinical credential

Read this before you consider cytotechnology

HPV primary screening and automated imaging have reduced the volume of manual Pap screening that historically defined this job, and the accredited program pipeline has contracted sharply. Balancing that honestly: ASCP states the CT and SCT exams will continue to be offered for the foreseeable future, and CMS/CDC recognised the SCT credential for CLIA compliance as of July 2024. This is not presented here as a growth field.

Why it is uncommon
The accredited program pipeline has contracted sharply, so few schools remain and cohorts are small.
Fastest legitimate entry route
A baccalaureate degree plus a CAAHEP-accredited cytology program completed within the last 5 years, accredited through the Cytology Programs Review Committee — note this is CAAHEP, not NAACLS — leading to the ASCP BOC CT(ASCP) credential, now titled “Cytologist – CT”.
Realistic training range
The accredited cytology program follows the bachelor’s degree; the degree is separate and usually the longer part of the timeline.
Prerequisites are separate: The baccalaureate degree is a prerequisite and sits entirely outside program length.
Overtime & call drivers
Screening backlogs and turnaround-time pressure in high-volume laboratories. Availability is employer-dependent.
What can limit earnings
Manual screening volume has fallen and accredited programs have contracted, so both training access and long-run role volume are uncertain. Bench work with little patient contact.
United States
Recertification requires 36 points per three-year cycle through the ASCP Credential Maintenance Program. New York licenses cytotechnologists; the New York State page also names California and Hawaii as licensing states — read that page for its own statement rather than relying on ours.

Orthopaedic Technologist (OTC)

Often open without a prior clinical credential

Get hired first, certify later — there is no school route

There is no accredited educational pathway for this role and no accreditor list of programs, which means no financial-aid-eligible school route and no clean answer to “where do I train”. The dominant entry is being hired as an orthopaedic tech aide and certifying two years later. Plan on the job coming first.

Why it is uncommon
There is no accreditation system behind it, so the role is largely invisible in school directories and is often absorbed into medical-assistant or athletic-trainer job descriptions.
Fastest legitimate entry route
The National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT) — a different organisation from the NAOT membership society — grants the OTC credential. Routes: 24 months of full-time work experience as an orthopaedic technologist in a US hospital, clinic or private practice; completion of a structured orthopaedic technologist program; or a route for certified or licensed athletic trainers.
Realistic training range
The dominant route is 24 months of documented full-time work experience before you can sit the exam. There is no accredited program length to quote.
Prerequisites are separate: Being employed in the role is effectively the prerequisite; the work experience is accumulated before certification, not during a program.
Overtime & call drivers
Emergency department and fracture-clinic coverage, call and weekend casting in busy orthopaedic services. Employer-dependent.
What can limit earnings
No accredited school route and no financial-aid-eligible program list. The work is physically demanding, and the function is often absorbed into medical-assistant or athletic-trainer job descriptions, which caps hiring and pay.
United States
No state licenses this role. NAOT publishes only model legislation, which is a proposal and not enacted law. Certifications last six years and lapse on December 31 of the sixth year; recertification by continuing education requires 120 CEUs with at least 40 in Category 1.

Post-professional — you need an existing credential first

These are advancement routes for people who already hold a clinical licence, not entry points.

Surgical First Assistant

Usually requires a prior credential
Why it is uncommon
It is a post-professional role, not an entry point, so the pool is small and hiring depends on surgeon preference and hospital privileging.
Fastest legitimate entry route
A recognised first-assistant certificate program — open only to people who already hold a qualifying surgical technology, nursing, physician-assistant or other accepted clinical credential — followed by certification (NBSTSA CSFA or an equivalent route) and employer privileging.
Realistic training range
The certificate itself can be relatively short, but the qualifying credential and required case experience that come first typically represent years. This is not a beginner shortcut.
Prerequisites are separate: The prior credential and documented operative case experience are prerequisites and dwarf the program duration. Count them honestly.
Overtime & call drivers
Call, trauma, long complex cases and add-on surgeries can raise income substantially where the employer pays for assist time.
What can limit earnings
Reimbursement and privileging rules decide whether the role exists at a given hospital at all. Some facilities use physician assistants or residents instead.
United States
State law, hospital privileging and payer rules all govern first-assisting scope; certification alone never grants authority to assist.
Canada

Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT)

Usually requires a prior credential
Why it is uncommon
Employment is concentrated in hospital wound-care and hyperbaric units and a small number of dive-medicine facilities, and there is no programmatic accreditor behind the training.
Fastest legitimate entry route
The National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT) grants the CHT. It is an add-on credential, not an entry route: qualifying pathways are respiratory therapist, physician assistant, active duty military corpsman, EMT or paramedic, registered nurse or LPN, nurse practitioner, or physician.
Realistic training range
Also required: an NBDHMT-approved hyperbaric medicine introductory training course within three years of the test date, and 480 hours in undersea, hyperbaric or aviation medical technology — 40 of which must be a supervised, physically present clinical internship under a CHT or CHRN preceptor with at least two years’ experience.
Prerequisites are separate: The qualifying clinical licence or credential comes first and represents years, entirely outside the CHT timeline.

Emergency chamber call, after-hours treatments and dive-medicine coverage where the facility offers them. Employer-dependent.
What can limit earnings
Employment is geographically scarce, and the two-year recertification cycle is the shortest of any pathway on this site.

ECMO Specialist

Usually requires a prior credential
Why it is uncommon
There is no accredited “ECMO specialist program” — training is hospital-based, and ECMO centres are concentrated in large academic and quaternary hospitals.
Fastest legitimate entry route
The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) defines the role as a registered nurse, respiratory therapist or perfusionist with special training in running the ECMO machine. ELSO offers an Adult ECMO Certification (E-AEC) assessed by a 120-question NBME-style exam.
Realistic training range
E-AEC requires one didactic course meeting ELSO adult learning objectives within the previous 15 years; one high-fidelity ECMO simulation course covering ELSO’s essential scenarios; and 16–32 proctored hours followed by at least one 8-hour shift every 8 weeks, averaging about 56 hours of ECMO patient care per year for a minimum of six months. Certification is valid three years.
Prerequisites are separate: The underlying RN, respiratory therapy or perfusion credential comes first and represents years, entirely outside this timeline.
Overtime & call drivers
Around-the-clock ECMO coverage, transport runs and call in quaternary centres. Employer-dependent.
What can limit earnings
This is a hospital job assignment layered onto an existing licence, not something you can train into. The clinical-hours requirement presumes you already work in an ECMO-capable ICU, and ECMO centres are concentrated in large academic and quaternary hospitals, so most of the country has none.

There is no state licence for an “ECMO specialist”; the underlying professional licence governs scope, and the employer decides who is assigned to ECMO.

The ethics of fast training

A shorter route can be entirely legitimate — or it can put an unprepared person next to a patient. These checks separate the two. Work through them before you pay a deposit.

    Speed must never replace supervised competence. If a program cannot explain how you become safe, its length is irrelevant.

    Ask how many supervised clinical hours or cases are guaranteed, who precepts them, and what happens in writing if a placement is delayed.

    A legitimate paid training pathway puts pay, hours, certification support and any repayment clause in writing. Promises of employment without written terms are not offers.

The fastest realistic route

  • Separate the two clocks: prerequisite time (how long to become eligible) and program duration (how long the credential itself takes). Most delay lives in prerequisites, not the program.
  • Apply to several accredited programs, not one. Cohorts are small and a single waitlist can cost a year.
  • Take prerequisites in the summer and winter terms most applicants skip.
  • Prefer programs with multiple intakes per year over a single annual start.
  • Ask which prior credits and credentials each program accepts — an existing licence shortens the runway more than any study hack.
  • Work in the department while finishing prerequisites so hours, references and pay accumulate at once.
  • Never trade accreditation or provincial approval for speed; it can end your eligibility to sit for certification.

How US hospital overtime rules actually work

The federal 40-hour week (FLSA)

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees generally earn at least 1.5x their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. The 'regular rate' usually includes shift differentials and certain bonuses, not just base pay.

The hospital 8/80 caveat

Hospitals and residential care facilities may agree with employees to use a 14-day period instead of a 7-day week. Overtime is then owed for hours over 8 in a day or over 80 in 14 days — whichever gives more. This is why three 12s can pay overtime at one employer and not another.

On-call, call-back and charting time

Whether on-call hours count as hours worked depends on how restricted you are. Charting after shift, mandatory huddles and donning required gear can also be compensable. Ask how the employer records it before you sign.

Collective agreements, exempt or excluded status, hours-averaging agreements, call-in and standby rules, statutory or public holidays, employer policy and payroll taxes can all change what you are actually paid. Confirm the rules that apply to your position in writing.

Travel and locum options

Travel contracts

Typically 8-26 week assignments away from your permanent home, arranged through an agency. Packages often combine an hourly rate with housing and meal allowances, and can end early if a facility cancels.

Watch for: Compare the total weekly package in the right currency — USD for US assignments, CAD for Canadian ones — and never convert a US rate to judge a Canadian offer. Ask about guaranteed hours, cancellation terms, floating and who pays for licensure and travel.

Locum / per-diem shifts

Shift-by-shift or short-term coverage, booked directly or through a staffing platform. Rates can be higher per hour and you keep schedule control.

Watch for: Employee versus independent-contractor classification changes everything: withholding, CPP/EI or Social Security and Medicare, benefits, and whether overtime rules apply at all. Hours are not guaranteed and paid time off usually is not included.

Licensure and credential portability

Working in another state or province means meeting that jurisdiction's licensure or certification requirements. Some professions have compacts or labour-mobility routes; many need a separate application, and processing takes weeks.

Watch for: Confirm licensure timelines and costs with the state board or provincial regulator before accepting a start date. A national certification is not the same as a state licence or a provincial registration.

Stipends, allowances and benefits cost

Housing and meal payments are only treated favourably in specific circumstances — in the US, when you genuinely maintain a tax home and duplicate expenses; in Canada, allowances are generally taxable unless a narrow exception applies.
